De sopraan Ruby Hughes, geprezen om haar diepe "begrip en elegantie" (Gramophone) van haar kunst, heeft een opmerkelijke discografie van recitals die de exquise schoonheid van haar stem laten horen. Ze staat vooral bekend om haar zorgvuldig samengestelde programma's die werken uit verschillende tijdperken combineren. In "Amidst the Shades" herenigt Hughes zich met gambist Mime Yamahiro Brinkmann en luitist Jonas Nordberg - dezelfde inspirerende sonische constellatie die bijdroeg aan het succes van "Heroines of Love and Loss". Dit nieuwe recital verkent hun gedeelde passie voor Elizabethaanse muziek, die als katalysator diende voor de creatie van het programma. De contemplatieve en melancholische liederen van John Dowland vormen de basis, gevolgd door werken van Robert Johnson en John Danyel, verweven met de intieme vocale stukken van Henry Purcell. Om het repertoire voor luit en zang verder te verrijken, gaf Hughes opdracht voor nieuwe werken aan Errollyn Wallen en Deborah Pritchard, gebaseerd op teksten van William Shakespeare. Ze kreeg ook toestemming van Cheryl Frances-Hoad om een van haar bestaande composities te arrangeren voor dit unieke ensemble. "Amidst the Shades" belooft een recital vol genuanceerde expressiviteit en delicate klankkleuren.
