“Der Abend dämmert, das Mondlicht scheint” (Dusk is falling, the moon is shining) Clara Schumann wrote in her diary: “A visit by Brahms. There is one that comes as if sent by God. He played us sonatas, scherzos etc., all showing exuberant imagination, depth of feeling and mastery of form. Robert said he could not tell him to leave something out of or to add to his music.” Brahms’ 3rd Piano Sonata (1853) is a work of symphonic proportions, his largest for piano solo, and indeed his last piano sonata. It is a passionate piece of music, masterfully combining a strict classical sonata structure with romantic spirit and content. The Variations on a Theme of Schumann (1854) are among the most satisfying and successful works of the young Brahms, and they are a moving homage to his mentor and to Clara.
