In the first half of the previous century, August de Boeck (1865–1937) was one of Belgium’s foremost musicians. But even now he remains a composer of international standing. His fames rests on five operas, a number of brilliant symphonic works, cantatas, religious works, art songs, works for diverse solo instruments and instrumental ensembles, and others. In addition to writing some fifty Children’s Songs, De Boeck set about fifty French-language and about sixty Dutch-language poems to music. The French-language songs especially reveal the refinement of his inspiration.
