Ensemble
Cappella Mediterranea
Cappella Mediterranea is a baroque ensemble founded in 2005 by Argentine conductor Leonardo García Alarcón. The ensemble aims to return to the aesthetic ideals of composers from Southern Europe in the 17th century and to find a worldwide audience for music from folk traditions around the Mediterranean Sea. It specializes in the dominant music genres of that period: the madrigal, the polyphonic motet and the opera. The ensemble frequently collaborates with the Chœur de Chambre de Namur, where García Alarcón is also artistic director.
Cappella Mediterranea is also dedicated to rediscovering forgotten music, such as 'Il Diluvio Universale' and 'Nabucco' by Michelangelo Falvetti, a Sicilian composer from the 17th century. The ensemble has also created new versions of standard repertoire works such as Monteverdi's Vespers and 'Orfeo' or Bach's 'Hohe Messe'.
In 2013, Cappella Mediterranea presented Francesco Cavalli's opera 'Elena' at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence. This marked the ensemble's international breakthrough. Since then, they have performed in major opera houses and at international festivals, such as the Opéra National de Paris, the Opéra Royal de Versailles, the Festival d'Ambronay, the Festival van Saint Denis near Paris, the Victoria Hall in Geneva, the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, the Konzerthaus in Vienna, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.
