Dirk Brossé

Dirk Brossé (Ghent, 18 February 1960) is a Belgian composer and conductor.

Dirk Brossé was born in Ghent and grew up in Heusden (East Flanders). He first studied at the music academy with Georges Vanhoute, the trombonist of the Groot Harmonieorkest of the Belgian Guides from Brussels, who gave him important impulses to pursue music professionally. He studied at the Royal Conservatory in Ghent, music theory, harmony, trumpet and piano. After obtaining his diplomas, he went to the Royal Music Conservatory in Brussels, where he completed his studies in counterpoint and fugue. He pursued further studies at the Conservatory Maastricht in Maastricht, the Netherlands, with Anton Kersjes and Lucas Vis for orchestral conducting, at the Conservatoire National de Région de Nice in Nice, France and in Vienna, Austria, with Julius Kalmar. The lessons of composers François Glorieux, Frederik Devreese and Leonard Bernstein had an important influence on him. Finally, he studied conducting at the Rheinische Musikhochschule in Cologne, Germany, with Volker Wangenheim, where he graduated cum laude.

In 1974 and 1979 he was a solo trumpeter with the National Youth Brass Band Belgium and also with the National Youth Orchestra of Belgium in the United States. In 1981 he accompanied the World Youth Orchestra on its concert tours.
