George Li
George Li (born August 24, 1995) is an American pianist. He began performing professionally at age nine and won an impressive series of awards, including a silver medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition 2015 and the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2016.
George Li was born in Boston, Massachusetts. His parents came from the People's Republic of China. His father is a scientist and his mother is an accountant, but classical music was omnipresent during his childhood and they gave their children every opportunity to develop creatively. Li's older brother and sister also received piano lessons and concerts by the Boston Symphony Orchestra are among his finest childhood memories. He himself received piano lessons from age four and participated in local competitions from age six. He studied with Chinese composer and political refugee Yin Chengzong and later with Korean pianist Wha Kyung Byun and with her teacher Russell Sherman.
Li performed for the first time with an orchestra in 2004, the Xiamen Philharmonic, when he was nine years old. A year later he made his solo recital debut in Boston. At age eleven he played in Carnegie Hall, in New York. This performance was broadcast in 2007 by television broadcaster NPR, with which he suddenly also made his television debut. Two weeks later he appeared on the Martha Stewart Show, a popular talk show.
Li received first prize from the Massachusetts Music Teachers Association at age 6 and at age 7.
