Herbert von Karajan

Herbert von Karajan (Salzburg, 5 April 1908 – Anif, 16 July 1989), originally Heribert Ritter von Karajan and, since the abolition of nobility in Austria, registered in the population register as Heribert Karajan, was an Austrian conductor and one of the most prominent postwar musicians. He conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker for many years.
Karajan was born in the Austrian Salzburg in an Aromanian family that originally came from the Greek Ioannina. He studied from 1916 to 1926 at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, where he was encouraged to take up conducting.

Herbert von Karajan was born into a family Karajannis (or Karajoannes) originally from the northern Greek province of Macedonia, of Greek and Aromanian descent. He was the great-great-grandson of the merchant Georg Karajan, originally Georgios Johannes Karajannis, owner of a plot in Chemnitz, and the great-grandson of Theodor von Karajan. Georg Karajan and his wife and his sons Demeter and Theodor were elevated to the nobility on 1 June 1792 by the Saxon elector Friedrich August II. Herbert von Karajan's father worked as a surgeon in Salzburg.
His mother Marta Kosmač came from a Carniolan family; her father Mihael Kosmač was born in Mojstrana near Kronau.

From 1929 to 1934 he was first Kapellmeister of the Stadttheater in the German Ulm.
