Opera Zuid
Opera Zuid is a Dutch opera company, founded in 1991, based in Maastricht.
Opera Zuid is a small company. Only the management and staff are permanently employed. For each opera production, singers and orchestra must be hired. Costumes and props are made by Opera Zuid itself. The company is housed in the former Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-van-Goede-Raadkerk and the associated cloister in the Malpertuis district in Maastricht-West.
Three productions are performed per season. Opera Zuid's first production in 1991 was Le nozze di Figaro by Mozart. Well-known operas the company has performed include Madama Butterfly and La bohème by Puccini, Carmen by Bizet, Rigoletto by Verdi and La Cenerentola by Rossini. In addition, the company presents modern or lesser-known operas such as L'étoile, L'amour des trois oranges, Julietta, L'heure espagnole, L'enfant et les sortilèges, Dreigroschenoper and Katja Kabanova. The latter opera (season 2010/2011) was directed by the renowned German opera director Harry Kupfer.
Opera Zuid collaborates with the philharmonie zuidnederland, with premieres alternating between Maastricht and Eindhoven. Most performances are given in the south of the country, but increasingly also in other cities in the Netherlands or the (neighbouring) abroad.
Miranda van Kralingen was artistic director of Opera Zuid from June 2004, and was succeeded in June 2017 by Waut Koeken.
