ANTWERP - Antwerp Symphony Orchestra (ASO) and Opera Ballet Vlaanderen (OBV) join forces and merge as of March 1, 2026 into one arts institution. The merger was established in consultation with the Flemish Government, which grants its support and approval. The general assemblies of both organizations formally approved the merger on February 26, 2026.
The new organization will be a single legal entity, with one governing body and one management. The two orchestras will continue to exist and will each retain their own specific mission.
This pooling of resources creates an artistic beacon that encompasses, supports and strategically better coordinates the disciplines of opera, dance and symphonic music. Collaboration between the different disciplines will offer unique opportunities in the future for boundary-pushing productions, which will strengthen Flanders' international position as a cultural region. At the same time, the merger allows for even greater ambition on the artistic level.
New structure
The organization will be temporarily led by a transitional management under the leadership of Jan Raes, currently general director of OBV.

In this way, we build on the rich tradition of both institutions to together write an inspiring story for our audience, our artists and staff."
Flemish minister for culture Caroline Gennez:

By bringing together these two complementary institutions, we guarantee not only artistic excellence and strong cultural visibility at home and abroad, but also strengthen the entire Flemish arts field. This institution will be a catalyst and example in terms of inclusion and contemporary, connecting leadership. At the same time, it will make a strong commitment to participatory and educational activities that attract a broad and diverse audience. In other words, it will become one of the crown jewels of artistic Flanders."
Opera Ballet Vlaanderen and Antwerp Symphony Orchestra will continue to communicate their programming provisionally under their existing names. A new name, logo and house style are planned for the 2028-2029 season.
