For the music theater festival All Arias, several Flemish cultural institutions join forces. From April 21 to May 5, they present new and innovative music theater from Belgium and abroad. Literary classics and major stories from different continents take center stage.
Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, DE SINGEL, Concertgebouw Brugge, Muziektheater Transparant and LOD muziektheater present in the coming weeks seven captivating music theater productions for young and old that have their world premiere or Belgian premiere in Brugge, Gent and Antwerpen.
Makers such as Bushra El-Turk, Julia Cheng, Lieselot De Wilde, Gorges Ocloo and Frederik Neyrinck tell stories about exploitation and inequality while simultaneously celebrating a universal search for freedom, hope and justice.
Thus Untold traces the roots of the Cinderella story back to 9th century China, while the 'AfrOpera' The Golden Stool or the story of Nana Yaa Asantewaa pays tribute to Nana Yaa Asentawaa, the leader of the Ashanti resistance against Great Britain. The opera Woman at Point Zero is based on the eponymous feminist classic by Egyptian writer Nawal El Saadawi and the family opera Kruistocht deals with child slavery and migration.
All Arias immerses the audience in a kaleidoscope of Eastern and Western musical traditions, from African songs and European avant-garde, from traditional folk instruments and the electropunk of the Compact Disk Dummies.
