An unheard baroque bouquet in the heart of the Bruges Béguinage

On Sunday, May 4, something special awaits in the historic Begijnhofkerk of Brugge. In the heart of the picturesque Begijnhof – where a unique tradition of independent, religiously inspired women has been cherished for over 800 years – we celebrate this rich heritage with an exceptional concert.

Lucia Swarts (cello) & Siebe Henstra (harpsichord): baroque masters in dialogue
Two internationally acclaimed musicians invite you at 5 p.m. on a musical journey through Europe. Cellist Lucia Swarts and harpsichordist Siebe Henstra, a tightly knit duo for many years, present a varied and surprising baroque bouquet. The programme features works by well-known and lesser-known composers:

• the undiscovered R. Greco

• the virtuosic Jean-Baptiste Barrière

• the Belgian-tinged Willem De Fesch

• Variations on La Folia by A. Scarlatti

• and of course music by the great masters J.S. Bach and Antonio Vivaldi

Both musicians are affiliated with the renowned Nederlandse Bachvereniging. They have collaborated on dozens of recordings and videos for the platform All of Bach, which has generated millions of views worldwide.

Introduction to the world of the beguines – 4 p.m. (free admission with concert ticket)

Prior to the concert, there is a unique lecture by Jo Berten, honorary chairman of the Koninklijke Gidsenbond Brugge and author of fourteen books. From 4 p.m. to 4:40 p.m., he takes you into the special universe of the beguines, as depicted in Rodenbach's novella collection Musée de Bégines. A captivating introduction to a world "where love needs a secret," as Rodenbach so aptly put it.

Presentation and additional experience

The presentation on May 4 is hosted by Bart Stouten, known from radio station Klara. After the concert, there is an opportunity to meet the artists during a meet-and-greet. Those who wish to enjoy more can join a pleasant meet-and-eat at restaurant 't Huidevettershuis.
