The Flagey Piano Days are entering their seventh edition in 2020 and that will be an extra large edition. Spread over two weekends, from 7 to 16 February 2020, Ludwig Van Beethoven is in the spotlight. The composer saw the light of day 250 years ago. His revolutionary music is to be heard at the festival during integral concert series of the cello sonatas and piano concertos or serves as an inspiration for jazzy and other improvisations.
Beethoven runs as a constant throughout the Flagey Piano Days and will be heard in every concert programme. Integrally, during the complete series of cello sonatas by cellist Gautier Capuçon and pianist Frank Braley, and with no fewer than three concerts by artist in residence Boris Giltburg who together with Brussels Philharmonic performs all the piano concertos. But also as an inspiration, in improvisations based on his music by Walter Hus, Noah Vanden Abeele and Poltrock or during a concert by jazz pianist Bram De Looze. Other great pianists such as Nelson Goerner, Tamara Stefanovich, Lucas Blondeel, Lucas & Arthur Jussen, Matan Porat and Vanessa Wagner draw inspiration especially for the festival from the broad oeuvre of the guest of honour, supplemented with a selection of works by other composers.
More than just concerts
During the Flagey Piano Days, more than twenty concerts are on the programme. In addition to this extensive offering, the public can also experience the festival in another way. During a masterclass by Lars Vogt for example. With musical theatre by pianist Eliane Reyes and master storyteller Patrick Poivre d'Arvor. Or during a lecture-recital by pianist Tom Beghin on a replica of Beethoven's Broadwood piano from 1817. There is again an exhibition with exceptional pianos, this time from the era of Beethoven, expertly selected by piano builder Maene. Throughout all this, the public can as usual relax in the cosy piano bar, while the youngest children can discover everything about the piano in a creative way in the kids corner.
