With deep sadness, we bid farewell to one of the greats in the world of classical music, the legendary conductor Yuri Temirkanov. Temirkanov, who served as chief conductor of the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra for many years, passed away on 2 November 2023 in St. Petersburg, at the age of 84.
Yuri Temirkanov has been at the helm of the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra since 1988. His musical journey began at the age of nine and led him to a remarkable career. After studying violin and orchestral conducting at leading Russian conservatories, including the Konservatorija im. N.V.Rimskogo-Korsakova, he distinguished himself as a remarkable conductor. Temirkanov won the Soviet National Conducting Competition in 1966 and subsequently brought his musical magic to stages around the world. He served as musical director of the Kirov Opera and led some of the world's finest orchestras as a guest conductor. Later in his career, he headed the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. Temirkanov will be remembered as a musical great.
Temirkanov's conducting art was like a bridge between the composer and the audience. His passion and interpretations brought the music to life, and his legacy will live on in the many unforgettable performances he conducted.
