Lunalia, Timeless music with the power of the full moon. Mechelen still hears voices. Lunalia is the successor to the new city festival of the Festival van Vlaanderen Mechelen. Under the expert direction of Jelle Dierickx a very varied programme was put together.
To warm up the general public, we started today (21 April) with a city festival where at six different locations you could already sample the offerings of this voices festival with short sessions of half an hour, just enough to give people a taste for more.
During the city festival we got a foretaste of the opening concert, more about that later. Enthusiasts could already sample short pieces from the Octopus Kamerkoor, conducted by Bart Van Reyn and from Caroline Eyck who displayed her virtuosity on the theremin. The Hof van Busleyden welcomed Thomas Moore, in this case the trombone specialist with the same name as the famous humanist. The diocesan centre opened its doors for a concert for organ and soprano. Hotel Elisabeth was the venue for Canadian performance artist angela rawlings, accompanied by the gifted lutenist Sophie van den Eynde.
In the cultural centre you could enjoy the constructions of Matrix, under the heading "Musica Futuristica". A playful way to let children of all ages taste experimental music and to help them discover musicality in the everyday. Self-designed instrument tables ensured that, under guidance, one could create an interplay. Besides, the cultural centre was also home to Mélinée, who with French chansons, with a Berlin twist, and accompanied only by her accordion, could create an atmosphere of hopeful melancholy. With her songs, which are very personally arranged, she takes the audience on a journey through vibrant Berlin, along the margins of life and all its associated misery. The journey goes from Toulouse, via Galway and Paris to Berlin and returns in the extra time to Toulouse. Her second to last song is about her best friend, where she can always turn to, her accordion. She definitively closes with a cover of Renaud, La Balade Nord Irlandaise, a song against dogma and for liberty.
