The 55th edition of MAfestival, the leading festival for early music in Brugge, pays tribute to women in music. For ten days - from 3 to 12 August 2018 - female composers and musicians, as well as writers, patronesses, muses and other iconic figures take centre stage.
Every summer, MAfestival presents and creates a broad range of musical activities in the historic setting of the city of Brugge and the surrounding region. This year's programme includes more than 20 concerts, the early music cycling tour Vélo Baroque through Brugge, an early music market, courses, lectures, a children's music holiday and of course the international music competition Musica Antiqua, this year for harpsichord.
Renowned names such as Skip Sempé, Ensemble Correspondances and Elizabeth Kenny are combined in the programme with young talents Apotropaïk and Le Consort. The connections with laureates such as Bertrand Cuiller, Jean Rondeau and Evgeny Sviridov are also highlighted. And MAfestival crosses gregorian chant with pop in an adventurous creation by An Pierlé and Psallentes.
