On Wednesday 10 March, Music Fund, the organisation that Lukas Pairon founded in 2005, was awarded the Prize for Democracy and Human Rights by the Parliament of the Walloon-Brussels Federation. This prize of € 10,000 rewards the non-profit organisation Music Fund for its support of music schools and socio-artistic projects in conflict zones and developing countries, as well as in Belgium.
Since 2005, Music Fund has been collecting, checking and repairing musical instruments and offering them to music schools and socio-artistic projects active in the field of music. Music Fund's partner projects are mainly found in southern countries (Palestina, Israël, Marokko, DRC, Mozambique and Haïti), but the association also regularly supports socio-artistic projects in Belgium through donations of instruments, for example: music projects with refugees and music academies that want to welcome young people who cannot afford an instrument.
The development of instrument repair workshops in the South and the training, through regular exchanges with Belgium, of local repairers form the core of Music Fund's mission. The association consolidates the lasting nature of its work by allowing partners to ensure the maintenance of instruments themselves and thus also their autonomy.
Since 2015, the parliament of the Walloon-Brussels Federation awards a prize every year for democracy and human rights. The main objective is to promote a specific achievement within the framework of the 'Organisation Mondiale de la Francophonie' and the values it defends in the promotion of peace, democracy and human rights.
For the Parliament of the Walloon-Brussels Federation, it is also a matter of further opening up to civil society and citizens.
The prize was presented in person at the Parliament of the Walloon-Brussels Federation in Brussels and was received by Lukas Pairon.
