Around the year-end transition of 1706-7, the 21-year-old Georg Friedrich Händel (1685-1759) arrived in Rome. A few months later, he was already sharing the stage with the renowned master Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713). Händel was inspired by Corelli and provided him with solo parts in which he could shine. Thanks to Corelli and Händel's rich legacy regarding instrumental chamber music, it was a rewarding task to compile a programme around this theme. The programme contains a variety of genres, instrumentations, compositional styles, tunings and affects.
Within the framework of 'Klassiek Leeft Vurig', Musica Gloria presents on Saturday 11 February (20.00) Encounters in Rome: Corelli & Händel (oboe, strings & claviorganum) in the Sint-Vincentiuskerk Ramskapelle, Knokke-Heist. For the ensemble, this concert is extra special, as they will present their brand new cd of this programme to the audience. "We look forward to bringing this programme, with a great variety of timbres, genres, instrumentations, compositional styles, tunings and affects." So say the Artistic leaders of Musica Gloria; Nele Vertommen (1999) and Beniamino Paganini (1994).
With this programme, the ensemble brings this old music back to life. By using the simultaneously warm and sparkling sounds of the very rare claviorganum, the bird sounds from the nightingale register and the use of two different oboes, they not only get to the heart of what the composers had in mind, but add an extra layer with their dynamic way of playing. "We always start from the music and its historical context, and let ourselves be inspired by it. This often leads us to surprising elements such as Händel, who often played his organ concertos on a claviorganum and more expressive ways to tune our instruments. From there, we want to tell our listeners an engaging musical story.
As a young, vibrant, Belgian baroque ensemble, Musica Gloria occupies a special place in the early music landscape. Beniamino Paganini (traverso and harpsichord) and Nele Vertommen (baroque oboe and recorder) have succeeded in putting Musica Gloria on the map in recent years as a baroque ensemble of international top level under their passionate leadership. Sharing the joy of making music together with people, that is what Nele and Beniamino want to convey with Musica Gloria. Musica Gloria has already been invited by organizations such as Klara, BOZAR, AMUZ, MAfestival, Musica Antica, 30CC, Mubafa, Festivals de Wallonie and Concertgebouw Brugge.
This concert results from the cd recordings (March 2022) of the programme 'Encounters in Rome: Corelli & Händel'. The cd that resulted from this will be officially presented after the concert.
