OPERA2DAY and the Nederlandse Bachvereniging presented in spring 2019 a brand new baroque opera, with music by Antonio Vivaldi. The fiery and virtuoso opera music of the Venetian composer is undergoing a true 'comeback'. In this production, Vivaldi's most exciting arias come together on a new libretto. An equally exciting story is told with it, based on the notorious epistolary novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. After numerous successful performances in the Netherlands, this story gets an international follow-up. As the first international co-production, Les Liaisons Dangereuses now also takes to the stage in Switzerland.
Under the title Les Liaisons Dangereuses Swiss co-producer Theater Orchester Biel Solothurn (TOBS) presents eighteen performances of Vivaldi-Dangerous Liaisons with its own orchestra and cast, the successful production by OPERA2DAY and the Nederlandse Bachvereniging from 2019. The Swiss premiere takes place on 31 March in Solothurn, followed by a tour of eighteen performances in eight cities.
Originally this opera was supposed to be seen in spring 2020 in the theaters of the co-producer in Switzerland. However, after a week of rehearsals in March 2020, the first lockdown came. Now, in spring 2022, this first international co-production by OPERA2DAY is a fact.
In the opera - based on the novel by Choderlos de Laclos - Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont play a dangerous game of love. The former lovers try to outdo each other with sensual cruelties. They challenge each other to seduce others. Their relationship becomes tense when Valmont seems to really fall for the seductive but chaste Présidente de Tourvel. In the vicious struggle that follows, all those involved ultimately go under. A fatal love story and a portrait of an era in which a bored elite succumbs to its own intrigues.
Serge van Veggel, artistic director and general director of OPERA2DAY, adapted the novel and directs the opera, in which three singers from the original cast participate: Candida Guida (Merteuil), Maayan Licht (Danceny) and Ingeborg Bröcheler (Tourvel). Alongside the six soloists, twelve actors take to the stage, who take on the role of servants. The scenography is again by Herbert Janse and the costumes by Mirjam Pater are also to be seen in this production. Vivaldi's instrumental fireworks are performed by Theater Orchester Biel Solothurn under the direction of Swiss-Argentine conductor Facundo Agudin. The recitatives newly composed for the original performance by Italian composer Vanni Moretti unite the work into a whole.
