This is a remarkable and intriguing album. It is both a tribute to the versatile composer Camille Saint-Saëns on the hundredth anniversary of his death, and to Claude-Paul Taffanel (1844-1908). The latter, born in Bordeaux, was first and foremost an excellent flautist, a true pioneer, a kind of "protective deity" who founded the French flute school and, together with his pupil Ph. Gaubert, wrote a valued Méthode complète de la Flûte, published posthumously in Paris in 1923. Moreover, Taffanel was also an orchestra conductor and author on musical subjects (he contributed to Lavignac's prestigious encyclopedic work with the entries L'art de diriger and La flûte). Furthermore, he showed an interest in reviving the music of the past.
