SPECTRA, ensemble for contemporary music (Gent) turns 25 years young!
On 7 February 1994, SPECTRA opened in MIRYconcertzaal the then contemporary music week and thus began its first concert season.
Exactly 25 years later, SPECTRA looks back on a quarter century of new music creations. All compositions on the programme were written especially for the ensemble during those 25 years. Frank Nuyts and Lucien Posman are companions from the very beginning. The compositions of Frederik Neyrinck and Stefano Gervasoni have been heard as far as Venice and Vilnius. And finally you can enjoy the very latest creations by Dominique Pauwels and Mirek Coutigny.

SPECTRA is an ensemble for new music. Since 1993, it has developed a remarkable musical coherence and a unique, refined sound from its core group of musicians. Filip Rathé is artistic director and conductor.
SPECTRA develops numerous projects with composers living in Flanders and promotes their work in international and historical context. It creates many commissioned works in constant dialogue with reference works from the recent past.
SPECTRA explores a wide range of presentation forms and collaborates with composers, theatre makers, visual artists and writers in the development of non-dogmatic programmes and individual interpretations. This has resulted in collaborations with, among others, Luca Francesconi, Stefano Gervasoni, Philippe Hurel, Guy Cassiers, Fabrice Murgia, Philippe Blasband, Peter Verhelst,…
SPECTRA performs within and outside Europe and at festivals such as Ars Musica (B), Transit (B), Festival Musica Nova (Brazil), November Music Festival (NL), Musica Sacra (NL), OEROL Festival (NL), Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (GB), the Traiettorie Festival (It), the Biennale Venezia (It), World Music Days 2010 Sydney (Au), Gaida Festival (Lt), Musica Strasbourg (F), Festival Internacional de Buenos Aires (ARG).
Finally, SPECTRA shares its expertise in the Master na Master programme in the interpretation of contemporary music in collaboration with the School of Arts Gent.
Filip Rathé (1966) studied piano and conducting at the Royal Conservatoire of Gent. He furthered his studies as a conductor with Laszlo Heltay and Pierre Cao and studied composition with Lucien Goethals. At the University of Gent he obtained a Master's degree in Musicology. Since 1993, Filip Rathé has been artistic director and conductor of SPECTRA, the ensemble for contemporary music with which he has performed throughout Europe and South America and created more than 150 new works. He has been guest conductor of, among others, the Symphony Orchestra of Flanders, the Flemish Radio Choir, Brussels Philharmonic and various ensembles (including I Solisti del Vento, Hermes Ensemble, Musiques Nouvelles). As a composer, he writes mainly vocal-instrumental chamber music. His works have been created by, among others, the Flemish Radio Choir, ASKO (NL), SPECTRA, Collegium Instrumentale Brugense, Exaudi, Kremerata Baltica and the Neue Vokalsolisten Stuttgart.
