In the course of the 18th century, the cello developed from a modest bass accompaniment instrument into a fully-fledged solo instrument. The recording explores the potential of this instrument in an ensemble in which three cellists play together, and shows the diversity of timbres and styles they can evoke. The presented works come from Giuseppe Clemente Dall'Abaco, represented by two trios and three capricci, as well as two "à tre" sonatas, one by Jean-Baptiste Barrière and one by Benedetto Marcello. The three musicians of the Berliner Trio Tiefsaits are specialists in historical, deep bowed instruments with a repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary music.
