Contemporaries Jan Blockx and Edgar Tinel were not only popular in their own country, but also enjoyed great international success: Tinel with his hagiographic oratorio Franciscus (1888) and Blockx with his veristic opera Herbergprinses (1896). Large-scale vocal works characterize their entire oeuvre, while piano music forms only a smaller part. Both were also dedicated teachers. Tinel was the second director of the École de Musique Religieuse in Mechelen from 1881 and led the Conservatoire Royal in Brussel from 1908 to 1912. Blockx was director of the Koninklijk Vlaams Conservatorium in Antwerpen from 1901 to 1912. They had regular contact
