Jan Sciffer studied at the conservatories of Ghent, Brussels, and Maastricht, and took masterclasses with Nathalia Chakovskaya, Heinrich Schiff, and Valentin Berlinsky. While still a student he became a prizewinner in several competitions, including the Pro Civitate, where he won first prize. This was followed by appearances with the BRT Philharmonic (now Brussels Philharmonic) and the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire (conducted by Marc Soustrot) in concerts by Dvo rák, Lalo, Saint-Saëns, and others.
