A paradigm shift? Why?
One word: tempo. Tempo determines everything in a composition. Also for Beethoven. In late 1826 he still asked his publisher to wait for his metronome markings. The world could not do without them.
Today, a breakneck-speed Beethoven is a symbol of an authentic Beethoven. But that version is untenable. Despite many claims, there is no orchestra fast enough to make the modern interpretation of his markings resound. It cannot be that early 19th-century musicians could play faster than what is humanly possible.
The solution is simple and lies hidden in how the pendulum was used then, but just as much is still used today. Back and forth together, the Time Period defines the note value in the metronome marking.
