Some will be surprised if Dora Pejacevic is described as a contemporary of Johannes Brahms; there is more than fifty years between the births of the two and their lives overlapped for only twelve years. Nevertheless, both works by Pejacevic undeniably lie in the same compositional line as the pieces of Brahms; and both are works written at an early point in Pejacevic' remarkable (and unfortunately far too short) life. Both pieces clearly stand in the romantic tradition and show no signs of the more modern direction that her later works would take. The Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective reports that it was immediately captivated by the passionate power of Pejacevic' Piano Quartet, but also by the delicacy of the slow movement, and felt that it was the perfect partner for Brahms' First Piano Quartet, a work with which Artistic Director Tom Poster has felt a special affinity since his student days. Brahms' piano quartet is justly one of the most popular chamber music works and there are few works that are more exciting to play: The first movement offers a wealth of beautiful themes, the second takes you to a mysterious dream world, the third movement revels in expansive lyricism, and the fiery virtuosity of the gypsy-like finale is a worthy conclusion.
This album marks the end of the ensemble's journey through Brahms' three piano quartets. They have recorded these works with great pleasure alongside three major piano quartets by composers who deserve to be much better known. The series, however, extends beyond the piano quartets: The Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective has more albums in the pipeline, which bring Brahms together with his brilliant and less-played contemporaries.
