Cantar del Alma
Carlos Gimenez, Jose Alberto del Cerro

Never before has the saxophone been heard in such a way as on this new recording: Carlos Gimenez explores the vocal side of his instrument with impressive effect. Gimenez lets the instrument, which is often ridiculed as robust, breathe, sigh, sing and speak. This results in completely new "songs without words" from Rachmaninoff to Mompou and Wagner, sensitively accompanied by José Alberto del Cerro on the concert grand piano.
The focal point and highlight of this highly varied recording: "Prelude and Liebestod" from Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" - a truly spine-tingling moment of emotion! It is astonishing how Gimenez manages to convey the intensity of endless, unfulfilled longing, even without text.
Catalan songs by Xavier Montsalvatge, Fernando Obrador and Federico Mompou provide expressive contrast, sometimes Caribbean, sometimes Spanish, sometimes completely withdrawn; with the Six Romances by Sergei Rachmaninoff one can also experience a very intimate side of the celebrated Russian piano virtuoso.
Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this in every way unusual album is the unobtrusive matter-of-factness with which all of this is heard. Gimenez and del Cerro find precisely the right tone and manage to bring out unexpected colours even in familiar pieces. All of this has been recorded in the finest Super Audio CD technology for a listening experience that is as surprising as it is delightful.
