Paris is dominated by fear. A series of murders leaves a bloody trail through the city. We are talking about E.T.A. Hoffmann's story "Das Fräulein von Scuderi", published in 1819 and often cited as one of the earliest German crime stories. And although the story is set in Paris during the reign of Louis XIV, the work has a deeply Romantic character, driven by a fascination with genius, coupled with dark passions and terrible crimes.
In 1925, Hindemith came into contact with publicist and poet Ferdinand Lion. Based on his libretto, which was characterized by Neue Sachlichkeit, Paul Hindemith composed music anew that, in all its modernity, consciously incorporated historical forms and brought them into play in a neobaroque manner. The acclaimed series of performances at the Vienna State Opera is released here for the first time as a gripping live recording. Tomasz Konieczny sings the title role and Vera-Lotte Boecker - Opernwelt magazine's singer of the year 2022 - plays his daughter. Other roles were performed by Herbert Lippert, Wolfgang Bankl and Daniel Jenz. Cornelius Meister conducts the Vienna State Opera Orchestra.
