Cassandra

This work deals with a situation everyone knows: you know what awaits you, but you can't do anything about it, you feel impending doom, but you are not heard. The opera "Cassandra" by Bernard Foccroulle describes precisely this situation. Two main characters from different time periods are like prophets in their time, harbingers of the world to come. One is Cassandra, daughter of King Priam of Troy: she warns of the disaster threatening her people during the Trojan War. Her warnings go unheeded and the world as it was then known comes to an end. Sandra, a young climatologist and doctoral candidate from our time, has turned to comedy as the language through which she hopes to convey her research on climate change and global warming - to no avail. Ultimately the main characters meet each other: Cassandra from antiquity and Sandra, struggling with the complexity of the present. Perhaps it is Cassandra who makes Sandra laugh... Bernard Foccroulle is a Belgian composer, organist and opera director; his opera Cassandra had its world premiere in September 2023.
