Onutė Narbutaitė's oratorio "Centones Meae Urbi" (1997) is a key work of Lithuanian contemporary music and earned the composer the Lithuanian National Prize. This new recording from 2024 with Robertas Šervenikas conducting the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, the Kaunas State Choir and Lithuanian vocal soloists Gunta Gelgotė and Nerijus Macevičius, is an important addition to Lithuanian music recordings. The Lithuanian capital Vilnius is a mosaic of cultures, music and languages. This diversity is expressed musically in the 70-minute multilingual oratorio "Centones Meae Urbi", a work that can also be seen as the composer's final breakthrough.
The Kaunas State Choir has been one of the most renowned Lithuanian vocal ensembles for more than 50 years. It takes pride in having been conducted by more than 70 Lithuanian and foreign conductors and its discography comprises more than 60 albums. The artistic director and chief conductor, professor Robertas Šervenikas, winner of the Lithuanian Culture and Art Prize, interprets both contemporary and classical repertoire and is frequently invited to premiere symphonic compositions by Lithuanian composers - or works such as Onutė Narbutaitė's impressive opera "Cornet". He has recorded dozens of albums of contemporary music.
The Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO), one of the most important musical ensembles in Lithuania, has been part of Lithuanian cultural life since its founding in 1940. It regularly participates in the Gaida International Festival of Contemporary Music, premieres works by Lithuanian composers, participates in recordings and presents Lithuanian music in live broadcasts on Euroradio, but also tours internationally and presents its programmes in Europe, Asia and South America.
