Chambered Music

Simon Steen-Andersen (* 1976) reveals the roots of his bold compositional style on "Chambered Music". With four early works, this album explores the fusion of sound, gesture and energy. Steen-Andersen defies conventional harmony by blending unusual texture, physicality and 'chamber' sounds into an original, captivating experience. Simon Steen-Andersen is a composer from Berlin known for his transdisciplinary approach and ambitious works in which he frequently incorporates film and choreography, such as his opera "Don Giovanni" (2022), "TRIO" (2019) and "Pianoconcert" (2014). This album offers a unique retrospective insight with four playful and daring early works that reveal how Steen-Andersen's recurring theme of alienated familiar elements evolves. The composer is fascinated by "changing the perspective and meaning of familiar things by inverting them or changing their context". For the title work "Chambered Music", he gathered ideas about how music or sound could be 'chambered', including a solo trombone placed 'removed from different doors or walls of the hall'. The main source material of the work is the muffled recitation of speech from the diaries of one of the most famous political prisoners in history. Another characteristic of Steen-Andersen's works is the use of sounds that emphasize the physical energy behind musical gestures, which is experienced in 'Praesens' through sheets of paper rubbed against cardboard and a credit card swept across the piano keyboard.
