The late works of Claudio Santoro are characterized by great conciseness and a remarkable emotional density. The music on this album was composed in the final months of his life. The viola concerto and the concerto for chamber orchestra combine restless energy with expansive – and sometimes somber – lyricism. The powerful Symphony No. 13 demonstrates Santoro's mastery of orchestration and form at its peak, and the compact Symphony No. 14 would be the last of a symphonic cycle that is widely recognized as one of the most important of its kind in Brazil. This release is part of an ongoing project to record all of Claudio Santoro's symphonies. The previous installments have been highly praised by the press, both for the performances of the Goias Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of chief conductor Neil Thomson and for Santoro's outstanding capabilities as a symphonist.
