This album presents a new arrangement of Franz Schubert's song cycle Die schöne Müllerin, performed by baritone Roderick Williams and the Carducci Quartet. The cycle, originally composed for voice and piano in 1823, contains poems by Wilhelm Müller that describe the emotional journey of a young miller through hope, love, jealousy and despair. In this recording, the piano part has been reinterpreted for string quartet, emphasizing the instrumental textures that Schubert's composition alluded to, while preserving the narrative line of the songs. The arrangement offers a new perspective on the structure and atmosphere of the work and emphasizes the central Romantic themes of nature, longing and reflection.
