Daan Janssens composed Eine schöne Müllerin in 2018, commissioned by the Leuven Festival 20·21, with the support of Muziekcentrum De Bijloke and SPECTRA. The starting point was the well-known song cycle Die schöne Müllerin by Franz Schubert and Wilhelm Müller from 1823. Although Daan Janssens' reinterpretation of this masterwork keeps the original recognizable, it is much more than merely a "modern instrumentation." Janssens adds extra textual and personal musical elements, creating a new work in which two sound worlds and two poetic worlds are interwoven with each other to varying degrees. Past and present reinforce each other.
This recording marks an important point in the ongoing collaboration that SPECTRA has developed with Daan Janssens since 2007.
