With their new release, the vocal ensemble VocaMe dedicates itself to a unique chapter from medieval cultural history: the works of the 13th-century Beguine mystic Hadewijch van Brabant, which have never been recorded until now. In close collaboration with Belgian scholars, a programme has been created that links historical research and artistic imagination in an impressive way. The Old Flemish texts and songs of Hadewijch are surprisingly sensual; the eternal search for love is reflected in nature, in spring, in the course of the celestial bodies. The music varies from quiet-melancholic, but also lively and moving to rhythmically accentuated. The vocal ensemble is accompanied by selected medieval instruments.
This album is more than a musical reconstruction – it is a poetic approach to one of the most fascinating voices from the Middle Ages. Hadewijch's vision of love comes across here not as an abstract concept, but as a vivid, deeply human experience: sensual, contradictory and of timeless relevance.
