Vox Luminis has once again joined forces with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra to celebrate Ascension Day together. This theme inspired great composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, whose four Ascension cantatas have come down to us. The festive and colorful cantata BWV 128 was composed towards the end of Bach's second year in Leipzig. The Ascension oratorio BWV 11 is written for a larger orchestra and ends with a triumphant chorus. From Georg Philipp Telemann alone, more than thirty cantatas for Ascension Day have been preserved. The cantata Ich fahre auf zu meinem Vater dates from 1721, and the ensemble of Lionel Meunier and the FBO give a fiery interpretation of this engaging music, whose texts focus on life after death.
