Among the outstanding composers of the Patriarchal Chapel in Lisbon, José Joaquim dos Santos (1747–1801) deserves mention, who entered the Patriarchal Seminary in 1754 and fortunately survived the devastating earthquake of 1755. His work is an impressive example of the fascinating connection between local tradition and Neapolitan influence, which shaped this exceptional musical period of Portugal. The orchestra Real Câmara presents as a first recording the responsoria for Good Friday with two concertante violas, bassoon, cello and double bass.
