Ashley Solomon and Ensemble Florilegium perform together with violinist Rachel Podger, soprano Elizabeth Watts and recorder player Hannah Parry a selection of Telemann's cantatas and double concertos. The cantata Ino, whose text is based on an episode from Ovid's Metamorphoses, is a highly dramatic, almost theatrical work in which a single soprano voice carries the entire plot. The two double concertos on this recording demonstrate Telemann's mastery of tone color and instrumentation. His unconventional, original approach to the concerto form is especially evident in the five-part concerto for flute and violin. The concerto for recorder and transverse flute, on the other hand, is one of his most popular instrumental works and is a shining example of his preference for unusual instrumental combinations.
