200000 This CD by The Counterpoints entitled "Italophilia: Discovering the Italian style in Handel's London" explores the Italian musical influences on English Baroque music in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. As early as 1683, Henry Purcell (1659-1695) wrote in the preface of his three-part sonatas that he "had faithfully attempted to make a proper imitation of the most famous Italian masters". In later years, the influence of these Italian masters would increase and reach its peak in the work of George Frideric Händel (1685-1759). This CD contextualizes Händel's work with composers who influenced him and by whom he was influenced, both in England and in Italy.
