Dmitri Shostakovich is primarily famous for his symphonies and string quartets: compositions in which humor can be found, but even more brooding, darkness and desolation. But Shostakovich also has a brutal, lighthearted side, and nowhere does that come to the fore better than in the works brought together here, whether it's the jazz suites, the Tahiti Trot or the ballet suites. This compilation, which appears alongside four other Shostakovich cd-boxes from Capriccio (symphonies, film music, orchestral songs and chamber music), is rounded off with two concerti. In Piano Concerto No. 1, the wink can be recognized, among other things, in the many quotations (songs, own works, Beethoven). In the 1st Violin Concerto, on the other hand, which was withheld for years for fear of reprisals, the sound structures are rather somber.
