Jenufa

Powerful music Leoš Janáčeks opera Jenufa is a gripping masterpiece. The opera premiered in 1904 at the National Theater in Brno, his birthplace Moravia, and is now rightfully his best-known and most performed opera. It is about the limited opportunities of a woman in the oppressive confinement of a Moravian village community. Jenufa, the stepdaughter of the widow sexton of the village, is pregnant out of wedlock by her lover Steva. In the remote village, this means disgrace or even death, and so the sexton's wife drowns the child born in secret without Jenufa knowing. Disfigured by a knife attack from Steva's stepbrother Laca, her lover soon turns his back on her. The Czech composer clearly spent many years analyzing the situation of his characters. The opera he ultimately completed is a flaming vision of human suffering, but also of redemption, making it a particularly intense experience that has found its way to opera stages around the world. Janáček uses the power of music to visualize the emotional structures of his characters, which is especially evident in the monologues of this masterpiece. The LSO live recording brings together a remarkably convincing cast, including Agneta Eichenholz with her heartbreaking portrayal of a vulnerable young woman and Katarina Karnéus, who delivers a painfully powerful Sexton. As the third installment in the Janáček opera series on LSOlive, Sir Simon Rattle, emeritus chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, once again delivers a Janáček highlight on the orchestra's own label, following the highly praised recordings of Katja Kabanowa (2024) and The Cunning Little Vixen (2020).
