The only preserved works by composer Charles-François-Grégoire de la Ferté are 12 violin sonatas that appeared in print in 1707. They are dedicated to none other than Philippe II, regent of France from 1715 to 1723, as representative of the still underage Louis XV. Apparently the nobleman Ferté had already been inspired to compose before he took up his important office, and the latter subsequently followed him to court, where he was one of the 24 Violons du Roy. His sonatas reflect the French musical style of that time, but contain melodic, harmonic and especially contrapuntal experiments.
