After the first recording of Saint-Saëns' opera Ascanio, Guillaume Tourniaire returns to the Geneva collection of b-sides to breathe new life into a new score ... and a tremendous composer: La Sorcière by Camille Erlanger! La Sorcière was written to a libretto by André Sardou, based on the play of the same name by Victorien Sardou and performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1912. It impresses with its theatricality and musical richness and combines in an original way the lyricism of the French post-romantic school, impressionistic transparencies and the aesthetic influences of naturalism. The terrifying portrait of religious and xenophobic intolerance and the fate of women under the yoke of the Spanish Inquisition in the 16th century is, more than a hundred years after it was written, still very relevant today.
