After falling in love with the quartets of Britten and Bartók, our long-cherished wish to record these masterworks became reality. For our debut cd, "Longing", we chose the first quartets of Britten and Bartók, as well as Webern's first string quartet, "Slow Movement". All three remarkable works are characterized by a deep and unmistakable longing. We felt connected to these composers because they, like us, were still discovering their own style and identity when they created these works. In his "Slow Movement", Webern beautifully depicts the yearning for love in the romantic 19th century. Bartók builds on this romantic idiom and further develops the new sounds of the early 20th century – a period from which we draw so much of our own passion. Finally, Britten, with his own distinctive palette, continues the exploration of the sound and identity of the 20th century. These works are not only breathtaking, they also express a longing that we recognize in ourselves and that we want to share with our listeners.
