The music of Robert Fayrfax is generally associated with the ornate style of the Eton Choirbook. Whoever thinks they know Fayrfax and all other music from that period - Eton, Browne, Cornysh, Lambe, Taverner and the early Tallis - does not expect the clarity of musical thought, the directness of expression in text setting or the maintenance of a highly emotional atmosphere over long periods such as we experience here in the votive antiphons presented by Peter Philipps and the Tallis Scholars.
