The Messa a quattro voci con Violoncelli, Fagotti, Basso, ed Organo is an example of a special kind of sacred music that emerged at the Portuguese court at the end of the 18th century and in which the bass instruments imitate a classical orchestral texture. The resulting instrumental ensemble consists of two cellos and two bassoons with solo lines, the bass line is taken over by the double bass and the organ. It would become the standard until the first quarter of the 19th century.

A collection of approximately thirty works, including masses, psalm settings, te deums, vespers and responsories, testifies to the importance of this repertoire in Portuguese musical life of that time, which in this form never existed in other European countries.
