Aumann received his musical training as a choir boy in Vienna, together with Michael Haydn and Johann Georg Albrechtsberger. In 1753 he entered the service of the Sint-Florianusabdij, where he later directed church music for more than four decades. His great Mass in C major is a true "Missa solemnis" with a beautiful orchestration of oboes, trumpets and timpani. The instrumental music is characterized not only by virtuosic and ornamental passages, but also by the incorporation of folk music elements. This is clearly evident in the Cassatio "La Pastorella", which was performed at Christmas in 1777.
