The recording of Mozart's piano concertos nos. 20 and 24 is intended as a contrasting twin project with the first recording of nos. 15 and 21, which came out on the Solo Musica label in 2024. The two recordings are yin and yang for each other, like the moon and the sun, and illustrate the many facets of Mozart's creativity. As a pianist, Zhen Chen wants to demonstrate with his interpretation that he is capable of developing and performing works that demonstrate a diverse artistic approach. Another interesting aspect of this collaboration is that the pianist and the orchestra are the same in both recordings – only the conducting baton has changed hands, from Austrian conductor Thomas Rösner to French conductor Paul Meyer – which is not least interesting for the audience, who can absorb the differences in musical concepts between the two conductors. According to him, nos. 15 and 21 are the quintessence of Mozart's piano concertos in major; they are cheerful, humorous and uplifting. Numbers 20 and 24, on the other hand, belong to the rare pearls among Mozart's multi-movement piano works in minor. Of the total 27 piano concertos, he composed only two in minor. They belong to the few works by Mozart that are characterized by a disturbing and somber atmosphere.
