Mozart: Violin Concerto No. 5 KV 219, Piano Concertos

Episode 11 of the series "Next Generation Mozart Soloists" presents the Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major and the Piano Concertos K. 40 and K. 449. The Piano Concerto No. 3 is a very early work, based on works by other composers, while No. 14 was written in 1784 by a mature Mozart, who moved away from functional music and began expressing his ideas in a more dramatic structure. According to Swiss-Canadian pianist Teo Gheorghiu, the two works have in common that they are both "concertos with a predominantly cheerful and optimistic expression". French violist David Castro-Balbi says that "of Mozart's violin concertos, No. 5 has the strongest operatic character". The two soloists are accompanied by the Mozarteum Orkest Salzburg under the direction of Howard Griffiths.
