Mr Dowland's Dream

Bor Zuljan, Clara Brunet

Label
Outhere Music
Format
Digital
After his acclaimed Dowland recording "A Fancy," Bor Zuljan draws fresh inspiration from the renaissance composer and presents a varied new program featuring works by Dowland and his contemporaries, but also by William Walton and Peter Warlock, Thelonius Monk and Pink Floyd. Night falls, Mr Dowland cannot sleep and seeks solace in his trusted Orpharion (an instrument developed in 1580 as an alternative to the lute). But this is no ordinary night: Orpheus and Arion inhabit the dark depths of his instrument and awaken instantly when Dowland touches the silver strings with his goldsmith fingers. They take him on a powerful, dreamlike journey, a visionary reverie full of surprises and avant-garde soundscapes. The music of the 17th century gradually transforms into unexpected worlds before Dowland finally sinks into deep sleep. Zuljan plays on a copy of a beautiful 9-string orpharion from 1617 and a 10-string electric orpharion specially developed for this recording. He is accompanied by Clara Brunet in this imaginative mixed recital of solo and vocal works, which also marks the 400th anniversary of Dowland's death.
