Mzansi Viola
Louise Lansdown, Charles Matthews
Mzansi Viola is a tribute to South African music through the viola (Mzansi is derived from the Xhosa noun meaning "south", an informal name for South Africa and is pronounced with a soft M and the stress on Z - ansi). I am proud to present Masebe's "Trials that Trail", a set of ten pieces in memory of the Rivonia Trialists (1963-64). I commissioned this work in 2020, at the beginning of the lockdown. Joubert's concert from 1947 and Reddy's viola music come to life in the recording world for the first time. Because I have known Hofmeyr and Stephenson for almost my entire life, it was a privilege and an honour to record their music. I hope you enjoy my personal selection of South African viola music. The next album is on the horizon...
